Welcome to the July edition of the newsletter!

This month we have new staff, exciting news on our Triple UKAS Accreditation , and I decide if I want to be a lorry driver.

Lorries, Boats and Trains

After getting up at 4 am (Yikes!) to join one of our drivers (who I might add regularly start their days at this ridiculous hour just to keep you lot happy !)  I enjoyed an outing in 'Polly' winding my way through leafy Surrey and then all the way down to the Sussex Coast for a decidedly 'transport related' day out in the sunshine !

First stop was Walton where we lifted a beautiful long boat out of the Thames, after some skillful lifting the guys positioned the boat on to another Southampton Depot Lorry which took the vessel to Somerset where it would be repaired and restored and made 'ship shape and Bristol fashion.'

After a quick stop for a cuppa and a Yorkie Bar ( Which I had to wear a false moustache to get) We headed on down to the Sussex coastal town of Wittering, where Two 19th-century railway carriages that had been turned into seaside holiday homes after the First World War awaited us.

The Carriages have been saved from the scrapheap by Railway Preservation Trusts and were waiting to be taken to their new homes at the Bluebell Railway East Sussex and Cartmel Railway Cumbria. The carriages, which carried troops during the war, still contained some of their original features including a warning that the fine for smoking in non-smoking areas was 40 shillings.

By the time we had the 2nd Carriage loaded we had caused quite a stir in the town, word had got out something big was going down and a crowd of onlookers peered through the Heras Fencing to see all the action.

With both loads finally on, Andy left for Cumbria and Gary and I left for the Bluebell Railway to drop off our precious cargo to the eagerly awaiting train enthusiasts, with the carriage finally lifted in to place ready for restoration we bid farewell to its new owners and set off homeward bound as the sun was beginning to set over the picturesque setting of the vintage railway. I have to say I had a great day and if everyday of being a 'trucker' is anything like that then I'm well up for my HGV test!
