Gatwick Group is backing The Times ‘Cities Fit For Cycling Campaign’ by adopting new CCTV technology which reduces the risk of fatalities or injuries caused to cyclists and other vulnerable road users when moving in to a vehicles ‘blind spot’.

Our entire fleet have been fitted with a state of the art 4 point camera system which allows the driver direct ‘real time’ views from the cab to each side of the vehicle and to the rear. The footage is also recorded and saved for six days on a aircraft style ‘black box recorder’.

We have installed the new camera system at a cost of £8000.00, along with implementing further in-house safety features as well as those recommended by The Times Safety Manifesto and by Crossrail.

In November, Times journalist Mary Bowers was just yards from arriving at work on her bike when she was hit by a lorry. Mary, 27, is still not conscious and is making a slow recovery in hospital.

Tragically, such an accident is far from rare. More than 27,000 cyclists have been killed or seriously injured on British streets in the past 10 years.

Bob Toon, M.D said : “We have long been aware of the problems associated with HGV’s and vulnerable road users, and hope that by adopting these innovative safety measures, along with educating both drivers and cyclists alike regarding the risks and responsibilities that come with sharing the roads, we can hopefully reduce the risk of injury or death.

The Camera System has so far proved to be a positive aid to our drivers and has been well received by them. If they prevent just one accident, then it’s got to be worthwhile fitting them as standard to all HGV vehicles.”
